Common vintage averages $50โ300 ยท Signed MCM and period antiques: $500โ$5,000+
Vintage furniture is one of the most lucrative โ and most frequently mispriced โ categories in estate sales and consignment. A mid-century modern chair can be worth $80 or $800 depending on the maker, era, and condition. This Pro guide covers what separates high-value vintage furniture from decorative pieces, with real price data by style and period.
Maker and attribution
Signed or attributed pieces (Herman Miller, Knoll, Eames, Nakashima, Stickley) command multiples of unattributed similar pieces. Look for maker's marks on the underside, back, or drawers. Labels, stamps, and original tags are the highest-value indicators.
Style period
Mid-century modern (1945โ1969) is currently the strongest market. Arts & Crafts / Mission (1880โ1920) and Art Deco (1920โ1940) remain strong. Victorian (1837โ1901) and colonial revival have softened in recent years โ condition matters more in weaker markets.
Condition and originality
Original finish, hardware, and upholstery add significant value. Re-upholstery in period-appropriate fabric is acceptable; low-quality modern upholstery cuts value. Refinished pieces typically sell for 30โ50% less than original-finish equivalents.
Form and functionality
Seating (chairs, sofas) and storage (dressers, cabinets) have the strongest resale velocity. Side tables, mirrors, and accent pieces move well. Large dining tables and armoires are harder to move โ they're heavy and don't fit modern spaces, even when valuable.
